Gidgee
Gidgee (Acacia cambagei) is a dense, tough Australian hardwood highly regarded for its exceptional hardness and durability. Its heartwood features a deep, reddish-brown to dark chocolate color with striking grain patterns that vary from straight to interlocked. Known for its extreme hardness, Gidgee is one of the toughest timbers in Australia, making it resistant to wear, decay, and pests. However, this also means it can be challenging to work with, requiring specialized tools for machining. Despite its difficulty to process, Gidgee finishes beautifully and is often used for fine furniture, specialty joinery, and tool handles, where strength and resilience are paramount. Gidgee is also commonly used for firewood, prized for its high heat output and long burn time.
Key Features:
- Rich, reddish-brown to dark chocolate color with varied grain patterns
- Extremely dense and hard, one of the toughest Australian hardwoods
- Resistant to wear, decay, and pests
- Finishes beautifully with an attractive sheen
- Challenging to machine but highly durable and long-lasting
Common Uses:
- Specialty furniture and joinery
- Tool handles and shafts
- Firewood (due to its high heat output)
- Decorative carvings and turning
- Heavy-duty construction and cabinetry
Sustainability:
Gidgee is sourced from sustainably managed forests in Australia. Its slow growth rate and limited availability make it a more niche timber, and responsible harvesting ensures it remains a viable resource for future generations.
Density & Hardness:
- Density: Approximately 1200–1400 kg/m³
- Janka Hardness: Around 13.0–15.0 kN (extremely hard, requiring carbide tools for machining)
