Blue Gum

Blue Gum (Eucalyptus saligna or Eucalyptus globulus, depending on the variety) is a high-density hardwood prized for its durability, strength, and attractive appearance. Its heartwood ranges from pale pink to deep red-brown, with a moderately coarse texture and interlocked grain that enhances its visual appeal. The timber is naturally resistant to termites and decay, making it a reliable choice for both indoor and outdoor applications. Due to its density, Blue Gum can be challenging to work with but responds well to sharp tools and finishes beautifully with oils and stains. It is commonly used in flooring, decking, cladding, and heavy construction where strength and longevity are essential.

Key Features:

  • Rich red-brown heartwood with a moderately coarse texture

  • Strong, durable, and highly resistant to impact and wear

  • Naturally resistant to termites and decay

  • Excellent for both indoor and outdoor use

  • Finishes well with oils and stains

Common Uses:

  • Flooring and decking

  • Structural beams and construction

  • Cladding and external applications

  • High-quality furniture and cabinetry

  • Boatbuilding and heavy-duty joinery

Sustainability:

Blue Gum is sourced from both native forests and managed plantations in Australia. Sustainable forestry practices ensure responsible harvesting and long-term availability. Plantation-grown Blue Gum provides an eco-friendly alternative to slow-growing hardwoods, reducing pressure on natural forests.

Density & Hardness:

  • Density: Approximately 900–1100 kg/m³

  • Janka Hardness: Around 9.0–11.0 kN (extremely hard, requiring sharp tools for machining)
